Confucius Institute Open Day 2018

On Wednesday 10th October the Confucius Institute is holding an open day in the Hartley Suite at Highfield Campus. The event will run from 5pm-7pm and with include Chinese music, cultural workshops and refreshments. There will be a jumble sale at SUSU selling Chinese-style accessories. Spanish hip hop artist El Chojín to visit Southampton

El Chojín — one of the biggest names in Spanish hip hop — will be visiting the Music department at Southampton on Thursday 1st December 2016, and speaking about his work from 3-5pm in Room 1077, Building 6 (Nuffield Theatre). El Chojín is known for both his social critique and for holding the Guinness World Record for the most syllables rapped in one minute. He will be accompanied by Dr Stuart Green, researcher of Spanish hip hop and racism at the University of Leeds. Continue reading →

AHRC follow-on funding award: Madagascar in the World

Professor Ulrike Meinhof has been awarded a grant under the AHRC’s Follow-on-Funding scheme worth £100,216 for her project  ‘Madagascar in the World: the impact of music on global concerns’. The project will start on 1 December 2015, and its purpose is the co-production (with the Parisian film company Laterit) of a film, working title  ‘Songs for Madagascar’,  and its international dissemination at film festivals and through workshops. University of Southampton Voices to perform ‘Requiem in Blue’ this Saturday

A number of staff from Modern Languages at the University of Southampton will be participating in the University community choir’s performance of ‘Requiem in Blue’, at St Michael’s Church in Bugle Street, Southampton, this Saturday 25 April 2015. Modern Languages singers participate in University of Southampton Voices performance

Earlier this month, a number of staff from Modern Languages at Southampton participated with colleagues and students in a performance by the University of Southampton Voices, the University’s community choir, led by Harvey Brough. The performance, which told the incredible story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, was a great success, attracting a large audience to St Michael’s Church in Southampton. Continue reading →
