Reshaping Languages in Higher Education Conference 2014 – Call for papers deadline next week!

The deadline for submitting papers for the ‘Reshaping Languages in Higher Education Conference 2014’ has been extended to Friday 28th March 2014. This seventh biennial conference on languages in higher education, organised by the Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS) at the University of Southampton, the University Council of Modern Languages (UCML) and the Association of University Language Centres (AULC), is taking place on 9 and 10 July 2014. First CLLEAR seminar of semester: ‘Inspiring teachers: Multi-Word vocabulary and literacy development in children with English as an Additional Language’

The first CLLEAR seminar of the semester will be taking place on Wednesday 5th February 2014 from 5.00-6.30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Avenue Campus, at the University of Southampton. The session is entitled, ‘Inspiring teachers: Multi-Word vocabulary and literacy development in children with English as an Additional Language’ and will be presented by Dr Victoria Murphy from the University of Oxford. ICT and Languages Conference: 8-9 February 2014

The fourth ICT and Languages Conference, entitled ‘Putting the pedagogy in the technology’, is taking place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February 2014 at the Avenue Campus, University of Southampton. The conference attracts delegates from across the UK, as well as a large online following on Twitter. Lecture on “Professionalism in language teaching”

Frank Farmer from the University of Quintana Roo in Mexico will be delivering a talk entitled “Professionalism in language teaching” on Thursday 2nd May at 6.00-7.30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Avenue Campus. The talk aims to stand back from received wisdom on what good language teaching is like, and uses a model of accountable professionalism to guide what should be included in teacher education as well as signalling the need to adjust teaching priorities. A new report by the European Commission entitled ‘The Key Data on Teaching Languages at School in Europe 2012’ has shown that children are starting to learn foreign languages at an increasingly early age in Europe. Many countries have lowered the starting age for compulsory language learning over the past 15 years and some are beginning to offer it at pre-school level. Continue reading →
