New Lifelong Learning languages courses announced for 2013/2014

Lifelong Learning at the University of Southampton has announced an expanded programme for the coming academic year, including a range of languages evening classes to suit all abilities from complete beginner to advanced conversationalist. Classes in 2013/2014 include Arabic, English as a foreign language, French, German, Greek, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Continue reading →

Language Clubs starting October

Lifelong Learning at the University of Southampton is launching a new Language Club scheme, designed for language enthusiasts (French, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and English Language) who are keen to improve their existing language skills. Professor Mike Kelly appointed ‘Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres’

Professor Mike Kelly from Modern Languages at the University of Southampton has been appointed a ‘Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres’ by the French government. This is in recognition of his contribution to promoting French language and culture in particular and language diversity more generally. It is unusual for this honour to be awarded to academics, as it is intended to recognise public impact in the cultural field. Continue reading →

TNMundi podcasts available

Two podcasts from the TNMundi project are now available on the Media content page and below. The TNMundi project investigated the creative practices of Francophone Malagasy and North African artists. A conference on ‘Music and Migration’ in October 2009 brought together academics and musicians from Madagascar and North Africa, including the acclaimed Madagascar AllStars who are interviewed in these podcasts. More future Modern Languages students to visit the University

More potential future Modern Languages students will be visiting the University on Wednesday 19th June 2013 for the Year 12 Languages Study Day, run by Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. The event is for Year 12 students who are thinking about studying languages at university. There are sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, plus the chance to do a taster class in a new language and attend a talk on languages and careers. Future Modern Languages students to visit the University

More potential future Modern Languages students will be visiting the University on Tuesday 11th June 2013 for the Year 8 Able Linguists Day, run by Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. The event provides year 8 pupils with the chance to develop their language skills further. Activities include an intensive mini-project in either French, German or Spanish, a taster session in a new language, plus a talk about languages and how they can be useful in the world of work.
