International students invited to sample British history and culture

International students from across the world will be attending an International Summer School at the University of Southampton in 2014. The Summer School will introduce participants to British culture, with classes in English Literature, Film Studies, History and Music, visits to historic places and cities including London and Bath, and organised social events. CLLEAR seminar today: ‘Inspiring teachers: Multi-Word vocabulary and literacy development in children with English as an Additional Language’

Dr Victoria Murphy from the University of Oxford will be delivering a talk today, Wednesday 5th February, for the first CLLEAR seminar of the semester. The seminar will be taking place from 5:00-6:30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Avenue Campus, at the University of Southampton, and is entitled, ‘Inspiring teachers: Multi-Word vocabulary and literacy development in children with English as an Additional Language’. ‘Teaching in higher education through the medium of English’ courses

The University of Southampton will be running a number of courses in “Teaching in higher education through the medium of English” over the coming year. Dates for the next two courses are 20th–24th January 2014 and 31st March–4th April 2014. These five-day courses are designed for academics in universities across the world whose first language is not English and who are delivering degree programmes and presenting research through the medium of English. Free online videos for English language teachers’ professional development

Modern Languages lecturer, Dr Julia Hüttner, has recently completed a project funded by the Higher Education Academy to produce a series of lesson recordings, with 16-18 year olds at a sixth form college in Hampshire and also of classes with international students at the University of Southampton. The videos, which include English language lessons and interviews with the classroom teachers, aim to help new English language teachers to gain a unique insight into their chosen profession. United Nations launches essay contest

The United Nations has launched an essay contest for college and university students which challenges students to write an essay in one of its six official languages on the role of multilingualism in a globalised world. The contest, entitled ‘Many Languages, One World’, supports international education and multilingualism through the continued study of Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
