Meaning in Language Learning Network news

The AHRC-funded Meaning in Language Learning network (http://millnetwork.org) led by Professor Roumyana Slabakova (Director of CLLEAR) and Dr. Heather Marsden (York) held its first network event on Saturday, 24 of January, 2015. The aim of the network is to create opportunities for language teachers, language learning researchers, and language education policy makers to meet and exchange ideas around the theme of Meaning in the language-learning context. It’s currently a pilot version but includes an increasing range of useful academic skill resources and a chat box linking you to a live librarian who is available to answer your questions online. The talk I gave for York Heritage Research Seminars #YOHRS

I had a great time in York on Tuesday evenings. It was a lovely audience with plenty of comments and questions afterwards. And it was international with people watching from the States (and maybe elsewhere) via Google Hangouts. And then afterwards on to the pub, where the conversation continued with the likes of Nigel Walter, Don Henson (member of the National Trust’s learning panel) and gamingarcheo herself Tara Copplestone, over delicious pints of Thwaits Nutty Black. Postgraduate researcher Anna Borg Cardona has uncovered maritime musical connections between Southampton and her home country of Malta: By 1814, Malta had become a British colony. British families soon began to settle on the Islands, accompanying army and navy personnel who were posted there. Some families transported their own musical instruments with them. Recognising potential commercial opportunities, merchants also began to establish a base on the Islands. Continue reading →

Latin American Studies Seminar Series: Life Expectancy Disparities in Cuba, 1987-2007

In this month’s Latin American Studies Seminar Series, Madelin Gomez-Leon from the ESRC Centre for Population Change at the University of Southampton will be discussing his current research on life expectancy disparities in Cuba.
