The Portuslimen Project. Geophysical survey at Tarragona, and the constraints of modern urban areas

Over the past few months of field survey, work has swung around to a series of projects lined to Roman ports in the Mediterranean. In June and July I headed back for a season of excavations at Portus, and in August and September geophysical survey at the site of Ephesus in Turkey (more on this in a future post). In October and November work has commenced on a geophysical and topographic survey of the Roman port area of the town of Tarragona in Catalonia, Spain. Continue reading →

Colourful finale for Mexico Week at the University of Southampton – a spectacular altar for Day of the Dead

Today marks the final day of a colourful week of celebrations for Mexico Week and the special ‘UK-Mexico Year 2015’ at the University of Southampton. As is now annual tradition, the Avenue Campus has hosted a beautifully decorated altar in honour of the Day of the Dead, created in collaboration with students and staff from across the University. In praise of opera

Recent alumnus Beth Coopey describes her surprise discovery of Opera during her studies, and how that changed  everything… I arrived at the University of Southampton with little interest in opera. I had sung a selection of arias but knew little about the operas from which they came.
