The Portuslimen Project. Geophysical Survey and Fieldwalking at Ephesus

One of the more constraining factors of geophysical survey in an archaeological context is the potential difficulty in dating or phasing anomalies in the data. Although hard science forms the main component of survey work, there is a large subjective element involved in the interpretation of geophysical survey data, which ultimately can decide the nature, function and phase of features. AHRC follow-on funding award: Madagascar in the World

Professor Ulrike Meinhof has been awarded a grant under the AHRC’s Follow-on-Funding scheme worth £100,216 for her project  ‘Madagascar in the World: the impact of music on global concerns’. The project will start on 1 December 2015, and its purpose is the co-production (with the Parisian film company Laterit) of a film, working title  ‘Songs for Madagascar’,  and its international dissemination at film festivals and through workshops. LANGSNAP project publication

In April 2013 the LANGSNAP research team organised a successful international conference in Southampton on study/ residence abroad. A selection of papers from the conference has now been published as: Mitchell, R., Tracy-Ventura, N, & McManus, K (eds) 2015 Social interaction, identity and language learning during residence abroad. Third run of Modern Languages’ MOOC ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’ a success

Modern Languages’ MOOC ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’ has just completed its third run. 44,284 learners participated in the course, bringing the total number of learners who have signed up for the MOOC to 145,041. This run of the MOOC included a live session led by Professor Jennifer Jenkins, Dr Will Baker and Dr Ying Wang from Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. Continue reading →

Cantores Carols

Just in time for the holidays:  The University of Southampton Choral Scholars – Cantores Michaelis – have just released their first commercial recording. Christmas Carols 1500-2000 is issued by the Herald label and is now on sale in record shops, at Turner Sims Concert Hall on campus, and through Amazon, and will shortly be available on iTunes.
