Sounds of the North

Centre for Global Englishes seminar: “How do we write in English as a Lingua Franca?”

Proposals for French spelling changes controversial

The BBC has reported on changes proposed to French spelling, approved by the AcadĂ©mie Française, which include the omission of the circumflex accent on some vowels, and of hyphens in some words. Global Englishes PhD conference, Centre for Global Englishes, University of Southampton, Friday 24th June 2016

On Friday 24th June 2016 from 10am to 5.30pm we are holding a one-day conference for up to 50 PhD students who are researching any aspect of Global Englishes. The event will begin with a keynote from Professor Anna Mauranen and then the rest of the day will consist of presentations and discussions from PhD students and recent postdocs.  We are offering free participation to both speakers and audience, and will include early and mid-morning and mid-afternoon refreshments, and lunch. Aesthetics, Athletics and Advertising

I always like going out to schools and colleges to meet sixth-formers and their teachers. It’s usually amusing, informative and largely straightforward. Some sort of entertaining academic talk aimed at the 17 and 18 year olds, and an outline of what it’s like to study music at university, career prospects, and so on. I do quite a lot of them, and they usually go very smoothly: everyone has a good time. Continue reading →
