Get Ready for Southampton 2016 launches!
Today the eLanguages team in Modern Languages are launching the 2016 edition of the free online course Get Ready for Southampton. This course aims to show what life and study is like for international students at the University of Southampton, and provides an opportunity for students to network prior to arrival. This is the sixth time this course has been run, and so far it has been used by over 10000 prospective international students.

Modern Languages PhD student wins Humanities Three Minute Thesis competition
Many congratulations to Sahar Alzahrani (Modern Languages) who won the Faculty of Humanities Three Minute Thesis competition on Wednesday. Sahar received both the Judges’ and People’s Choice awards.
Sahar’s three minute presentation was entitled ‘Enhancing learner autonomy in language learning through a blended course’.

Peter, con il supporto del team del Portus Project, ha creato dei tour per i periodi di Claudio, Traino, dei Severi, e per il periodo dal quinto al settimo secolo. C’è anche un tour che permette una visita virtuale al sito archeologico attuale e una sequenza temporale interattiva del sito.
I tour rappresentano solo una prima fase del progetto che prevede molte aggiunte e modifiche.

New online tours of Portus launched
We are pleased to launch a series of online tours produced by Peter Wheeler. Peter, with input from the rest of the Portus Project team, has created tours for the Claudian, Trajanic, and Severan periods, and for the Fifth to Seventh Centuries. There is also a tour providing a virtual visit to the archaeological site as it is today. Finally there is an interactive timeline for the site.
The tours are intended only as a first step and we have many additions and modifications planned.

New languages introduced by Google Translate
The BBC has reported on the introduction of 13 new languages to Google Translate, bringing the total of available languages to over 100. According to Google, these new additions will enable an additional 120 million people to use its service. Languages introduced include Corsican, Scots Gaelic and Hawaiian. In summer 2010 I sat in the house furnished by Rhys Isaac in Colonial Williamsburg, and attempted to write my first dissertation chapter. I’d just finished my first research trip, to Library and Archives Canada, in Ottawa, and was in the middle of my second, at the John D. Rockefeller Library.
