British Council urges Britons to try Portuguese for the Olympics

The British Council has published an article urging Britons to “give Portuguese a go” for the Olympics Games. According to the article, British Council research has shown that Portuguese is “the sixth most important language for the UK’s future”. The British Council has also designed bilingual visitor handbooks to help visitors and athletes at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. To read the article in full, visit the British Council website. Modern Languages student champions Rio 2016 Brazil rugby initiative

Prospective and current Modern Languages students who are thinking about how they might spend their year abroad will be inspired to hear about Modern Languages student Andrew Turner’s Year Abroad activities. Andrew is spending his Year Abroad in Brazil, working on a placement as Development Officer for Premiership Rugby on the Try Rugby Brazil project, using Rugby Union as a social tool in some of Brazil’s most deprived communities. Upcoming Modern Languages/CLLEAR seminars

Modern Languages and the Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research (CLLEAR) are pleased to be hosting a visit from Dr. Elisabet Pladevall Baluster from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in July, who will be offering two seminars focusing on bilingualism and on CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The first seminar will take place on Tuesday 26th July at 4pm and is entitled “L1 Use and Focus on Form in a co-taught CLIL programme”. Continue reading →

Harpsichords return to Mottisfont

University of Southampton researchers Katharine Hawnt and Christopher D. Lewis are involved in an exciting project to reintroduce the harpsichord at Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire. In March 2016 this small harpsichord was installed in the Boy’s Room at Mottisfont Abbey. The new display was instigated by the Making of the Modern Harpsichord project, a collaboration between the University of Southampton and the National Trust. Continue reading →

The conference provides a forum for discussion of recent, high quality research on second language acquisition, bilingual and multilingual acquisition, psycholinguistics and neurocognition.
