More future students for Modern Languages

Languages South-East will be holding its Year 12 Able Linguist Day at the University of Southampton on Tuesday 22nd January 2013. More than 100 Year 12 future modern languages students will be attending this event and taking part in a variety of sessions on cultural topics, careers in languages and language taster sessions. Grab the CAD with GrabCAD

Today I had very interesting meeting with chief engineer from GrabCAD. As they say on their website GrabCAD is a community founded by mechanical engineers. It is also a place for engineers to share their talent, expand knowledge, find a dream project and work with tools and features that make life better. We were discussing how this engineering tool, which enables you to share and collaboratively work with your 3D models, could be used in cultural heritage and archaeology. Continue reading →

sotonDH small grants: ‘A Connected Island?’: measuring academic influence

This second blog post about the Connect Island project, funded by a sotonDH small award, discusses the relative influence of Central European Palaeolithic researchers using the H-index measure. Registration open for E-Learning symposium – 24th/25th January 2013

LLAS will be holding its 8th annual e-learning symposium on 24th/25th January 2013. The event comprises a practical mix of workshops on authoring tools and e-learning techniques and presentations about the possibilities that online learning offers. The symposium aims to bridge the gap between the ‘techie’ and the teacher, giving educators ideas to help them integrate e-learning into their practice but also inspire them to see where the online future could lead. Speaking two languages from childhood keeps the brain in good shape

The Mail has published an article reporting on a study that found that speaking two languages from childhood keeps the brain in good shape as we age. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, found that senior citizens who have spoken two languages since childhood are faster at switching from one task to another than those who only know one.
