Italian film season to begin next week

The University’s new Italian film season starts next week with a screening of ‘Il sorpasso’ (Dino Risi, 1962) on Monday 4th February 2013 at 6.30pm in Lecture Theatre A, Avenue Campus, University of Southampton. Weekly films offer a mixture of old and new and cover different genres and subject matters. All films have English subtitles. Films are introduced in Italian by a tutor, a student or a guest speaker, and are followed by a discussion in Italian and in English. Continue reading →

CALR lectures for Semester 2 to begin next week

The first Centre for Applied Language Research (CALR) lecture of Semester 2 will be taking place at 5pm on Wednesday 6th February in Lecture Theatre C at the Avenue Campus, University of Southampton. A joint event in conjunction with the Centre for Transnational Studies (TNS), the session is entitled “Choose your language! Talk on careers in EU institutions

A talk on career opportunities for language graduates in EU institutions will be taking place on Wednesday 13th February 2013 from 6.00 – 7.00pm in Lecture Theatre A, Avenue Campus. Exploring, in particular, the work of translators, the talk will offer insight into the challenging and varied work on offer, explain the recruitment procedure and will provide information on the traineeship scheme. Day Two at Kom el Hetan

More area to survey today behind the Colossi of Memnon on the West Bank. We started the day one person down, as Dom’s insides are still rumbling, possibly due to the Egyptian cuisine.  He stayed in to do some office work, and the rest headed out to cross the Nile. We continued the GPR survey behind the Colossi of Memnon, and ran two ERT profiles in front of the same. In addition Sarah’s search for survey stations from previous years continued with the GPS rover. Continue reading →

THaWS Project – Start of the week survey at Kom el Hetan

The start of another busy week in Thebes and the team headed back to the West Bank to commence GPR and ERT survey in the vicinity of Kom El Hetan and the Colossi of Memnon. The bus stopped however for a short visit to the impressive brickworks on the east bank to the south of Luxor. A massive chimney and a series of arched entrances leading to the kilns mark the site on the banks of the Nile. Continue reading →

A Hitchhiker’s Guide to Complexity

E-learning symposium 2013 starts tomorrow!

The 8th annual e-learning symposium will be taking place at the University of Southampton on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th January. LLAS will be live streaming the four keynote speakers via the LLAS website. Most sessions during the event will also be recorded and will be available on the LLAS website after the event. Japanese students exchange Kyoto for Southampton

Seven Japanese students from Doshisha University in Kyoto have recently headed home after spending a year studying at the University of Southampton. The undergraduate students combined classes in English language with courses in Humanities, studying alongside fellow second year students from the UK, European Union and around the world. This was the first visit by students from Japan as part of Southampton’s partnership with Doshisha University. Continue reading →

Michel Leymarie podcast

The French historian Michel Leymarie visited the University of Southampton on 30 October – 1 November 2012 as part of the ILC’s visiting scholars programme. M. Leymarie teaches Contemporary French History at l’Université de Lille III Charles-de-Gaulle. He is a member of the Institut de Recherches Historiques du Septentrion, and a research associate in History at Sciences po (Institut d’études politiques de Paris). Continue reading →
