How to fix incorrectly aligned RTI images

Often, when capturing a RTI data set, especially when using a cable, the images captured can be out of place, resulting in an incomplete data set. The following is a how to guide to fix this problem using Photoshop. The first step is to load all of the files into Photoshop using the correct tool. The many languages of London

The London Evening Standard has reported on statistics from the 2011 Census showing that 78 per cent of the capital’s residents speak English as their main language, with the remaining 22 per cent, equivalent to just over 1.7 million people, speaking another first language. The most striking finding is that, according to the Office for National Statistics, there are 53 ‘main’ languages in the capital spoken by at least 0.1 per cent of residents. Continue reading →

First CALR lecture of the semester tomorrow

The first CALR lecture of the new semester is taking place on Wednesday 6th February 2013 from 5.00-6.30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Avenue Campus, University of Southampton. A joint event in conjunction with the Centre for Transnational Studies (TNS), the session is entitled “Choose your language! Geophysics at Karnak – Intensive GPR survey and the beginning of the end of the survey

The latest work on the THaWS project has been marked by the intensity of survey profiles and survey areas covered, and  the fact that the team have been working almost exclusively in and around Karnak temple. The transition of the GPS survey from the West to the East Bank went smoothly, as reported in the last post. We established a base station on the roof of Chicago House on the West Bank, with the very kind permission of the staff. Continue reading →

The Italian film, Il sorpasso (Dino Risi, 1962) will be showing in Lecture Theatre A, Avenue Campus, at 6.30pm on Monday 4th February 2013. A review, introduction and discussion will be led by Alessia Plutino. Considerato come il capolavoro del regista Dino Risi, il cast del primo film di questa rassegna include il grande Vittorio Gassman nel ruolo di Bruno, un quarantenne immaturo e sfacciato e un giovanissimo Jean-Louis Trintignant nel ruolo di Roberto, un timido studente di legge. Polish now England’s second language

The Guardian newspaper has reported that Polish is now the main language spoken in England and Wales after English and Welsh, according to figures from the 2011 census released by the Office of National Statistics. Language-speaking figures were recorded for the first time in the census of 56.1 million people in England and Wales. Of these, the census data reveals that 545,000 speak Polish, making Polish the second main language in England. Continue reading →

Kom El Hetan, Thutmoses III and Karnak – from the West to the East Bank

A few days of work have happened since the last blog, and plenty has happened since the weekend. The team woke up on Monday to find that it had been raining all night in Luxor, and it continued until the middle of the morning. So much so in fact that a huge pool of water developed next to the flat entrance. The inadequate drainage meant that around 3pm a van turned up and pumped the water away. Continue reading →
