New Study Abroad Bloggers for Humanities

Five new Study Abroad Bloggers, all undergraduate Southampton Humanities students currently on their third year abroad study/work placements, have been selected across a variety of Humanities disciplines. Shipwrecks and Submerged Worlds: starts Monday.

Our free, 4-week, online course starts on Monday. It’s a fantastic introduction to maritime archaeology open to anyone, anywhere in the world. Stuffed full of articles, videos, slideshows, interactive timelines and links to fantastic online resources, it has been designed by a team of lecturers, researchers and postgraduates at the Centre for Maritime Archaeology. They will be on hand throughout the course to respond to comments, queries and new ideas. ESRC network grant success

Laura Domínguez and Roumyana Slabakova have been successful in securing an ESRC network grant (£30,000) as part of an international network of researchers led by Monika Schmid (Essex). This will fund a series of seminars on the topic of First Language Attrition – the process by which the first language of a speaker who uses another language predominantly (e.g. migrants) becomes compromised and shows signs of cross-linguistic interference. Modern Languages staff participate in successful LangOER webinar

Kate Borthwick from Modern Languages was amongst a panel of speakers in a webinar earlier this month entitled ‘Open Educational Resources for less used languages in an increasingly digital everyday culture: What are the challenges and how will we tackle them?’ Around 70 participants were involved in the live event, in which Sylvi Vigmo from the University of Gothenburg and Anna-Comas Quinn from the Open University also presented. Bluetooth LE again

An opportunity may be coming up that has been thinking again about heritage spaces and narrative. This year’s Museums and Heritage Show was full of companies offering Bluetooth LE (BLE, or if you prefer, Apple’s trademarked version, iBeacons) interpretation. Most worked along the lines of “approach object/artwork with your device (phone or tablet), and a BLE beacon will tell your device where it is, whereupon it will serve up interesting tidbits of information. New Italian film season begins on Monday 6 October

Modern Languages’ new Italian film season will begin on Monday 6 October 2014 with a showing of L’imbroglio nel lenzuolo (Alfonso Arau, 2010) in Lecture Theatre A, Avenue Campus, at 6:30pm. The autumn season promises an inspiring selection of films, old and new, covering different genres and subject matters. All films are introduced in Italian by a tutor, a student or a guest speaker, and are followed by a brief discussion (in Italian and English). Continue reading →
