Minecrafting Italy

Last week I set up my first Minecraft server. I’d been discussing how we might build Portus on the University’s Minecraft server, but because we don’t yet have Admin access to that I thought I ought to set one up on one of my own machines to start understanding how it all works. The first Centre for Global Englishes seminar of the academic year will take place on Wednesday 15th October 2014 from 5:00pm-6:30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Building 65, Avenue Campus. Hands Across The Globe

(Maxime Aubert) Are hand stencils, older than 40,000 years in Sulawesi, the visual relic of Humans’ journey out of Africa? A paper published in Nature today (Aubert et al. 2014) reveals U-Th dates on calcite deposits formed over painted hand stencils and shows the stencils are older than 39,900 years old along with figurative art that is older than 35,400 years old. Julian Whitewright to be AIA’s 2014 Steffy Lecturer

Dr Julian Whitewright will be the Archaeological Institute of America’s Steffy Lecturer for 2014-2015. Julian will be delivering lectures at the University of Missouri, the University of Toronto and the University of Michigan during late October. He’ll present both his ongoing work into the sailing rigs of the ancient Mediterranean and research on eighteenth and nineteenth century British ships and shipbuilding. Continue reading →
