Developing contacts in Thailand

Postgraduate students from Thailand already study at Southampton Humanities Graduate School in some numbers, mostly following programmes in applied linguistics/English language education. Following this trend, a group of 11 lecturers from the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University, Thailand visited the Department of Modern Languages on Monday 22 April. CALR lecture: “Doing ethnography in multilingual schools: Latin American students in Catalonia”

The next CALR lecture is taking place on Wednesday 1st May at 5pm in Lecture Theatre C at Avenue Campus. The lecture is entitled “Doing ethnography in multilingual schools: Latin American students in Catalonia” and will be presented by Dr Adriana Patino. The presentation will focus on the methodological challenges and dilemmas encountered, as well as some relevant findings, in carrying out a collaborative sociolinguistic ethnography in a secondary school in Catalonia. Free Peking Opera public workshop and concert

The Tianjin Municipal Youth Peking Opera Troupe will be holding a free public workshop and concert, sponsored by The Confucius Institute and Chinese Art Southampton, on Friday 26th April 2013 in the Turner Sims Concert Hall, University of Southampton. The workshop will run from 11am-12pm and will be followed by the concert from 1pm-2pm. Peking Opera is a form of traditional Chinese theatre which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. Continue reading →

Lecture on “Professionalism in language teaching”

Frank Farmer from the University of Quintana Roo in Mexico will be delivering a talk entitled “Professionalism in language teaching” on Thursday 2nd May at 6.00-7.30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Avenue Campus. The talk aims to stand back from received wisdom on what good language teaching is like, and uses a model of accountable professionalism to guide what should be included in teacher education as well as signalling the need to adjust teaching priorities. TNS Annual Lecture: “Transnationalized Trajectories: Good Nation and Good Citizenship in East Asian School Curricula and Textbooks”

The TNS Annual Lecture will take place at 6pm on Wednesday 24th April in Lecture Theatre C at Avenue Campus. The speaker is Yasemin Soysal from the University of Sussex, and her lecture is entitled: “Transnationalized Trajectories: Good Nation and Good Citizenship in East Asian School Curricula and Textbooks”. The Institute for Language and Culture blogging site, developed by Modern Languages at the University of Southampton, is now live. Designed to highlight current research in Modern Languages, the site has space for research stories, media content arising from research activities, and links to sites that have collected research materials. British Academy report on ‘Multilingual Britain’

The British Academy has recently published its latest report entitled ‘Multilingual Britain’, produced in cooperation with Cumberland Lodge. The report discusses the role of multilingualism in the UK as an asset and resource that is not fully valued, and is one of a series of publications by the British Academy on language issues within the UK.
