Record numbers of students Get Ready for Southampton!

A new record has been set for the number of students on our free Get Ready for Southampton course. Now in its third year, the course has attracted over 2100 students for 2013, with numbers still climbing. Get Ready for Southampton, developed by the eLanguages team, has run since 2011 and enables both incoming and prospective Southampton international students to taste what life is like at the University before coming to study. Modern Languages welcomes new Chair in Applied Linguistics

Modern Languages at the University of Southampton has recently welcomed a new Chair in Applied Linguistics, Professor Roumyana Slabakova, to the department. Professor Slabakova’s research and teaching expertise focuses on syntax, pragmatics, and the second language acquisition process. In particular, she uses online and offline psycholinguistic methodologies to investigate issues relating to bilingual and multilingual grammar. Continue reading →

UCAS statistics reveal languages decline

The Times Higher Education has reported on new research revealing that the proportion of 18 year olds applying for non-European language degrees has fallen by more than a third in three years. The research, conducted by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), has also shown that from 2010 to 2013, there was a 16.7 per cent fall in demand for European language and literature university programmes.
