Annual celebration of DĂ­a de los Muertos at Avenue Campus

This year, as is tradition at Avenue Campus, an altar has been set up to celebrate the Mexican DĂ­a de los Muertos – the Day of the Dead (see image). The altar, produced with care by teachers and students from Mexico, is known as an ‘ofrenda’. Here, mementos of loved ones who have passed away, examples of some of their cherished possessions and even some of their favourite foods are displayed. In addition, brightly coloured flowers and candles are designed to attract the spirits. Continue reading →

Modern Languages Year 12 Autumn Study Day

Forty potential future Modern Languages students will be visiting the University’s Avenue Campus on Tuesday 5th November 2013 for the Year 12 Autumn Study Day. The event is designed for students who are thinking about studying languages at university. There are sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, as well as the chance to do an introductory session in another language (such as Chinese or Portuguese). Modern Languages students in demand

According to recent statistics from the annual DLHE (Destination of Leavers of Higher Education) survey of former students six months after graduation, Modern Languages and other Humanities graduates are increasingly successful in finding work after their studies at the University of Southampton. The latest survey (of over 2,000 Humanities graduates) revealed that the vast majority of former students have found work or are involved in further study shortly after leaving Southampton. ELF ReN workshop: “ELF and multilingual practices in professional contexts”

The next ELF ReN workshop will be taking place at the University of Southampton Avenue Campus on 7th and 8th November 2013. The workshop is entitled “ELF and multilingual practices in professional contexts” and aims to encourage multi- and inter-disciplinary exchanges on the phenomenon of super-diversity in ELF professional contexts. Inaugural Lecture of Professor Marion Demossier on 6th November

Professor Marion Demossier will be giving her Inaugural Lecture on Wednesday 6th November at 6pm in Lecture Theatre A, Building 65, Avenue Campus, University of Southampton. The lecture is entitled ‘Changing Places. The taste of Heritage in Burgundy’ and will be chaired by Professor Ullrick Kockel from the University of Ulster.
