Top four position for modern languages and linguistics at Southampton in Guardian University Guide

Modern languages and linguistics at the University of Southampton has been placed in 4th position in the UK this year in the Guardian University Guide, after Cambridge, Oxford and Surrey. Southampton also received the joint highest score in the table for student satisfaction with teaching. This is the eighth year that Modern Languages has appeared in the top 5 in this table, which is specifically focused on learning and teaching, student satisfaction and careers. Continue reading →

Learning a language has a positive effect on the brain

The BBC has reported on recent research showing that learning a second language ‘slows brain ageing’. The study undertaken by researchers from the University of Edinburgh used data from intelligence tests on 262 individuals at the age of 11, and looked at how their cognitive abilities had changed when tested again in their seventies. This research follows on from another recent study which showed that being bilingual could delay the onset of dementia. Continue reading →

Course for international academic staff in English as a Medium of Instruction

Modern Languages at Southampton is running an intensive two-day course on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th June 2014, designed for international academics whose first language is not English and who are delivering degree programmes and presenting research through the medium of English. Modern Languages singers participate in University of Southampton Voices performance

Earlier this month, a number of staff from Modern Languages at Southampton participated with colleagues and students in a performance by the University of Southampton Voices, the University’s community choir, led by Harvey Brough. The performance, which told the incredible story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, was a great success, attracting a large audience to St Michael’s Church in Southampton. Continue reading →

Which languages did Jesus speak?

The BBC has reported on current debates around the language(s) that Jesus would have spoken. Whilst several languages were used in the places where Jesus lived, many believe that Aramaic would have been his first language, whilst Hebrew would have been used to respond to scholarly questions.
