Call for papers for LLAS/UCML/AULC ‘Languages in Higher Education’ conference now open

The call for papers for the 8th biennial joint LLAS, UCML and AULC conference is now open. The event, entitled ‘Frameworks for Collaboration and Multilingualism’ will take place at the University of Warwick on 6-7 July 2016. Centre for Global Englishes seminar: “How do we write in English as a Lingua Franca?”

The next Centre for Global Englishes (CGE) seminar will take place on Wednesday 24th February 2016 from 5 – 6:30pm in Lecture Theatre C, Building 65, Avenue Campus. Proposals for French spelling changes controversial

The BBC has reported on changes proposed to French spelling, approved by the AcadĂ©mie Française, which include the omission of the circumflex accent on some vowels, and of hyphens in some words. The next Centre for Mexico-Southampton Collaboration (MeXsu) seminar will be taking place from 5:00-6:30pm on Wednesday 17th February 2016, in Lecture Theatre C, Building 65, Avenue Campus. Brazilian Carnival at the Students’ Union

This Saturday, SLAPS (the Spanish, Latin American and Portuguese Society) and the Brazilian Society are holding a Carnival in Bar 2 of SUSU (Southampton University Students’ Union) this Saturday. A display about the event can be seen along the north corridor of Avenue Campus, and more information about the event, including where to buy tickets, is available on the Facebook event page. Study suggests different written languages are equally efficient at conveying meaning

The results of a recent study, led by the University of Southampton, suggest that despite the difference in the forms of different languages, native speakers of those languages can read passages in a comparable amount of time to each other. University welcomes in the Year of the Monkey

University students and staff will be participating in celebrations today organised by the Confucius Institute to mark the Chinese New Year. A variety of activities and workshops will be taking place between 11:00 and 14:00 in the SUSU concourse, Highfield Campus, including calligraphy, Chinese knot weaving, paper cutting, Chinese games, tea ceremony, traditional music and an historical costume show.
