New phase of development approved for international student website

The Prepare for Success website, which provides a wide range of open academic learning resources to help prepare international students coming to study in higher or further education in the UK, is to receive funding for a new stage in its development. UKCISA, the UK Council for International Student Affairs are supporting an eighth phase, which will see the technical customisation of the website for smaller screens, enhancing accessibility and improving search rankings. Southampton Language Opportunity offers new intensive courses

The next series of intensive language courses for the Southampton Language Opportunity will take place from 11th-15th April 2016. Spaces still remain for Portuguese 1a. The Southampton Language Opportunity offers University of Southampton students the chance to learn a new language free of charge alongside their degree. Modern Languages PhD student receives British Council Assessment Research Award

Modern Languages PhD student, Maria Georgina Fernandez Sesma, has been successful in obtaining this year’s British Council Assessment Research Award. Maria is currently in the second year of her PhD and is researching the topic: ‘Blended Learning: Assessing EFL Teachers and Students’ Use of and Perceptions toward Learning Technology’, under the supervision of Dr Ying Zheng. ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’ MOOC starts today!

A new run of Modern Languages’ MOOC ‘Understanding Language: learning and teaching’, starts today, Monday 4th April, and will run for four weeks. Over 15,000 people have signed up to take the course already. This will be the fourth run of the MOOC, taking its reach to over 160,000 people. Get Ready for Southampton 2016 launches!

Today the eLanguages team in Modern Languages are launching the 2016 edition of the free online course Get Ready for Southampton. This course aims to show what life and study is like for international students at the University of Southampton, and provides an opportunity for students to network prior to arrival. Modern Languages PhD student wins award for best-researched poster

Modern Languages PhD student Sahar Alzahrani received an award for the best-researched poster at the Learner Autonomy Special Interest Group (LASIG) Conference 2016 in Antwerp, Belgium, which took place from 3-4 March 2016. The Italian film, Si accettano miracoli / We Accept Miracles (Alessandro Siani, 2015) (103 minutes, in Italian with English subtitles) will be showing in Lecture Theatre B, Avenue Campus, at 6.30pm on Monday 14th March 2016. Review, introduction and discussion by Leonardo Provvedi. All welcome! This is the last film of the season, so the discussion will take place over nibbles and drinks.
