Modern Languages student champions Rio 2016 Brazil rugby initiative

Prospective and current Modern Languages students who are thinking about how they might spend their year abroad will be inspired to hear about Modern Languages student Andrew Turner’s Year Abroad activities. Andrew is spending his Year Abroad in Brazil, working on a placement as Development Officer for Premiership Rugby on the Try Rugby Brazil project, using Rugby Union as a social tool in some of Brazil’s most deprived communities. Upcoming Modern Languages/CLLEAR seminars

Modern Languages and the Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research (CLLEAR) are pleased to be hosting a visit from Dr. Elisabet Pladevall Baluster from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in July, who will be offering two seminars focusing on bilingualism and on CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The first seminar will take place on Tuesday 26th July at 4pm and is entitled “L1 Use and Focus on Form in a co-taught CLIL programme”. Continue reading →

Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research to host GASLA conference

The Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research (CLLEAR) in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton will be hosting the 14th Generative Approaches to Second Language Acquisition conference (GASLA 14) to be held at the University of Southampton on 6-9 April 2017. The conference provides a forum for discussion of recent, high quality research on second language acquisition, bilingual and multilingual acquisition, psycholinguistics and neurocognition. Modern Languages staff receive teaching award

Modern Languages’ Carmen Martín de León and Cristina García Hermoso have been awarded second place for best Spanish teachers of the year, in the international congress, IV Congreso Internacional del Español en Castilla y León. The innovative teaching project they presented, which was also praised by our Stage 5 students this academic year, was based on Carmen’s published book series, El Mundo de Custodio.
