Coming to an end; THE FINAL REFLECTION

Prior to undertaking the module, Living and Working on the Web, my insight into dealing with employability through the utilization of the web was constrained. I do not know the importance of having an authentic professional online profile, neither do I have a LinkedIn account. Through my self-test, I feel my development throughout this module is clearly evident. My online presence: Prior to the module, I know little about managing my online identity, privacy and security. Takeaway for Topic 5: Open Access- Good or Bad?

Credits: Trainee Solution Peer-learning is a compelling way to widen my horizon of a topic through the engagement of my peers with different opinions, and this topic was no exception. As a student, I decided to relate Open Access with school as we constantly use the internet to research for journal articles. Unsurprisingly, some of my peers share a student’s perspective on this issue as well- for example Ebrahim and Yu Ting. Continue reading →

Open Access to Online Material- Good or Bad?

Open Access saves lives (and, closed access means people die) – Peter Murry-Rust, 2011 What is open access? Open Access is free, immediate, online availability of research articles, coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment. (Shockey & Eisen, 2012) Open access covers a wide scope of materials such as videos, pictures, research articles or even academic tools such as past year practice questions. Continue reading →

Takeaway on Topic 2: Is your digital footprint within your control?

Yay! It’s reflection time, so what’s my takeaway? This topic on online identity, privacy and security had taught me the importance of managing and protecting our identities online and awareness of our surrounding is key especially when we are moving towards a world where online privacy faces tremendous threats. Is your digital footprint within your control?

Topic 2 on Online Identity, Privacy and Security The advancement of technology is changing the way we socialize and express ourselves (Chatti et al., 2007). As mentioned in Topic 1, the Internet has become a part of our everyday lives. However, when we perform social media activities, we are encouraged to divulge our personal data. It is easier to target customers as we hand over our data, which is a dream come true for marketers. Continue reading →

My takeaway on Topic 1: Are you a digital visitor or resident?

Indeed, this question allowed me to put on my thinking cap given the fact that it’s been awhile ever since I write a blog post. Topic 1 has been a great learning experience by allowing me to understand the diverse opinions and views of my fellow classmates. After researching the topic and reviewing blogs from my classmates, I have come to the conclusion that majority of the people are not simply classified into the two categories “visitors” and “residents”.
