The End or The Beginning?

One of the questions that I asked myself when choosing my degree programme was ā€œhow practical is this for me?ā€ ā€“ How is this course going to help me in terms of finding a job that suits me and building a career for myself in todayā€™s world? I have to say this module, ā€˜Living and Working on the Webā€™ which is the third one in my marketing course, has definitely been a practical one. Why? Well for one, the internet has become a lot more than what it was before. Continue reading →

Reflection: Topic 5- For freeā€¦ really?

When I began exploring this topic I really had no real opinion on the issue of open access probably because Iā€™m not a content producer myself. At least not yet! Nevertheless, as I put myself in the shoes of one through research, I was able to appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of open access. I commented on Shafiqā€™s and Jeremiahā€™s posts. Shafiq is an online content producer unlike me and that added value to his outlook on the issue. Continue reading →

Reflection: Topic 4- The Divide

Being a digital ā€˜residentā€™ myself, I have always considered the Internet to be a ā€˜placeā€™ to connect with people, share information and create content. Today the realms of business and education have also embraced social media and the internet in general to expand reach and increase impact of activities. As I explored this topic, it reminded me that the internet being home for communities and the digital personas of real people and businesses, was a realm filled with ethical issues. Topic 4: The Divide

I live in Singapore with my parents and things are easy to take for granted when you can just wake up, pull out your phone and check through your social media. Sometimes I game online that requires massive amounts of data but it barely crosses my mind. A 2012 report by the International Telecommunication Union forecasted a total of 2.7 billion people to be using the internet by the end of the year but that would still leave 4.4 billion people offline. Reflection: Topic 3- Sell yourself- Professionally.

So Iā€™m in university now and I have a little more than a year and a half before I go out into the world looking for a job. Being in this position, the topic of building an authentic professional profile was quite eye-opening and helpful. As I developed the content for my post I realised that today companies and employers are investing considerably in recruitment through social networks and this medium has proven to be quite effective and efficient. Topic 3: Sell yourself-Professionally.

A couple years ago Justine Sacco, a 30 year old communications executive tweeted this before going on her holiday: ā€œGoing to Africa. Hope I donā€™t get AIDS. Just kidding. Iā€™m white!ā€ Next thing she knew, she was the subject of worldwide criticism and she had lost her job. (Ronson, 2016). This is not an isolated incident and reckless online behaviour can cost you as the graph below indicates: Source:Ā https://www.jobvite.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Jobvite_SocialRecruiting_Survey2014. Reflection: Topic 2- Multiple Online Identities

When I began exploring the arguments for and against multiple online identities, I realised that these two schools of thought were quite critical and relevant to the digital world. The intimacy and extent of interactions and transactions taking place on the web has exponentially risen in the past few years whether it is in the field of e-commerce or even online dating platforms. People want to know and gain as much information as possible about who their dealing with. Continue reading →

Topic 2: To Be or Not to Beā€¦ Me?

A while ago, when I was installing the music streaming application Spotify, I came across this window:       ā€œSIGN UP WITH FACEBOOKā€. The alternative to that as you can see, was to create a separate account which of course I found hectic and so I decided to share the information on my Facebook with Spotify.   A web of ā€œtransparencyā€? The scenario that I described above represents a phenomenon that has been prevailing in the digital world today. Continue reading →

Reflective Summary: Topic 1

When I started this module, I was wondering what kind of topics we might actually deal with. I was pleasantly surprised with the relevance and depth topic 1 had in store for me as I dived into it. The concept of Digital Visitors and Residents is one that was always present around me as I dealt with people that were on different points of the spectrum all the time but actually learning about a clear classification helped me to gain more clarity in how I view the world and people around me.
