Topic 1: Reflection

I think it’s safe to say that being a Media student at A-Level definitely played it’s part on my first post for UOSM2008. Throughout A-Level Media ‘digital natives’ is regularly used to define the people of today. I think this showed in my response and to an extent provided me with a narrow outlook. Coming across digital residents and visitors allowed me to have a broader view. Continue reading →

Topic 1: Reflections

Topic one introduced the notion of Residents and Visitors of the Web as opposed to an older topography of the Internet, which divided its users upon Digital Immigrants and Digital Natives. Whilst the initial categorisation focused on the importance of the age of the user: ‘nativity’ would correspond to people born in the age of the web, the new categorisation focused only on how one uses the Web. Topic 1: Reflective Summary

Before wring my first blog post for UOSM2008, I have never heard of the terms “digital residents” and “digital victors”, or even digital “native” and “immigrants”. Topic 1: SUMMARY – Digital ‘Residents’ and ‘Visitors’

The discussion on the digital ‘resident’ and ‘visitor’ has been enlightening. It has increased my understanding of some of the debates surrounding who fully utilises and benefits from technology. Although difficult to quantify, Tamara Manton’s citation of White’s Matrix was particularly helpful in simplifying the question of exactly who is a digital resident and visitor. Continue reading →

Topic 1: Digital Residents and Visitors

Before the mid 80’s, access to computers, related technology and the media was limited to TV, radio, film and print. Since then, there has been continuous access to new technologies, which have expanded an individual’s access to the world. According to McLuhan (1964), “the globe has been contracted into a village by electric technology and an instantaneous movement of information”. Continue reading →

Topic 1: “Digital Residents” and “Digital Immigrants” Question: Explain the concept of digital “visitors” and “residents” drawing upon your reading and your own online experiences to date in support of the points that you make. Let’s start by outlining who a “digital resident” and “digital visitor” is. By breaking down these terms, by definition, a resident is someone who permanently lives in a particular place.
