Topic 1: Reflective Summary

When I first saw the question to consider for Topic 1, I instantly thought that I must fall into the category of ā€˜Nativeā€™ in terms of my use of the Web and Technology. However, as I began to research and read ideas presented by Prensky and Cornu and White I started to question whether perhaps the distinctions they were making were perhaps a little too simplistic. Topic 1: Reflection

I think it’s safe to say that being a Media student at A-Level definitely played it’s part on my first post for UOSM2008. Throughout A-Level Media ‘digital natives’ is regularly usedĀ to define the people of today. I think this showed in my response and to an extent provided me with a narrow outlook. Coming across digital residents and visitors allowed me to have a broader view. Continue reading →

Topic 1: Reflections

Topic one introduced the notion of Residents and Visitors of the Web as opposed to an older topography of the Internet, which divided its users upon Digital Immigrants and Digital Natives. Whilst the initial categorisation focused on the importance of the age of the user: ā€˜nativityā€™ would correspond to people born in the age of the web, the new categorisation focused only on how one uses the Web. And in this case, I think Iā€™m guilty of failing to challenge their nature. Continue reading →

Topic 1: Reflection

The ‘Digital Resident’ and ‘Visitor’ narrative was a very interesting starting point for the first blog post. The idea of starting a blog on the topic of how we categorise peopleā€™s usage of the web produced posts that were easy to relate to and discuss. Sophie Elliottā€™s post used personal experience to reiterate the potential divide between parents and children. The post also highlights how experience and knowledge shape our use of the web. Topic 1: Reflection

White and Le Cornuā€™s research regarding ā€˜Digital Visitorsā€™ and ā€˜Digital Residentsā€™ has resulted in various interesting and well-informed discussions amongst the group. Though I started with very little knowledge on the topic, through research and interacting with fellow studentā€™s blogs, I feel that I now have a greater understanding of the concept. Personally, I value the distinction between online and offline. Continue reading →
