Topic 1: Reflection

I think it’s safe to say that being a Media student at A-Level definitely played it’s part on my first post for UOSM2008. Throughout A-Level Media ‘digital natives’ is regularly used to define the people of today. I think this showed in my response and to an extent provided me with a narrow outlook. Coming across digital residents and visitors allowed me to have a broader view. Continue reading →

Topic 1: Reflections

Topic one introduced the notion of Residents and Visitors of the Web as opposed to an older topography of the Internet, which divided its users upon Digital Immigrants and Digital Natives. Whilst the initial categorisation focused on the importance of the age of the user: ‘nativity’ would correspond to people born in the age of the web, the new categorisation focused only on how one uses the Web. Topic 1: Reflective Summary

The first topic introduced some relatively simple concepts ….’Visitors’, ‘Residents’, ‘Natives’ and ‘Immigrants’. If I were to categorize myself with these concepts I would be both a Resident and a Native. It’s very easy to accept such simple, self-evidently accurate terms, and not question them. And in this case, I think I’m guilty of failing to challenge their nature. Continue reading →

Topic 1: Reflection

The ‘Digital Resident’ and ‘Visitor’ narrative was a very interesting starting point for the first blog post. The idea of starting a blog on the topic of how we categorise people’s usage of the web produced posts that were easy to relate to and discuss. Sophie Elliott’s post used personal experience to reiterate the potential divide between parents and children. The post also highlights how experience and knowledge shape our use of the web. Topic 1: Reflection

White and Le Cornu’s research regarding ‘Digital Visitors’ and ‘Digital Residents’ has resulted in various interesting and well-informed discussions amongst the group. Though I started with very little knowledge on the topic, through research and interacting with fellow student’s blogs, I feel that I now have a greater understanding of the concept. Personally, I value the distinction between online and offline. Continue reading →

Topic 1: Reflective Summary

Before wring my first blog post for UOSM2008, I have never heard of the terms “digital residents” and “digital victors”, or even digital “native” and “immigrants”. But after I have done some reading on this topic, putting my thoughts out on my blog and reading others opinions on this aspect, I have learnt some much more and have a more holistic and better understanding about this topic. Continue reading →

Reflect on Topic 1

After I have post my blog on Topic 1 it was my turn to go and read my other class mates blog and comment on their blogs. I have done that over last few days and learn so much that I would like to express below. First blog – Aliyu Aliyu                               https://aaaliyu.wordpress. Continue reading →

Topic 1: SUMMARY – Digital ‘Residents’ and ‘Visitors’

The discussion on the digital ‘resident’ and ‘visitor’ has been enlightening. It has increased my understanding of some of the debates surrounding who fully utilises and benefits from technology. Although difficult to quantify, Tamara Manton’s citation of White’s Matrix was particularly helpful in simplifying the question of exactly who is a digital resident and visitor. Continue reading →
