AHRC follow-on funding award: Madagascar in the World

Professor Ulrike Meinhof has been awarded a grant under the AHRC’s Follow-on-Funding scheme worth £100,216 for her project  ‘Madagascar in the World: the impact of music on global concerns’. The project will start on 1 December 2015, and its purpose is the co-production (with the Parisian film company Laterit) of a film, working title  ‘Songs for Madagascar’,  and its international dissemination at film festivals and through workshops. New research repository: LANGSNAP

A new research repository is now available on the research materials page. The 2011-2013 LANGSNAP project tracked the language learning and social integration of 57 students during their Year Abroad in France, Spain and Mexico. With support from Adam Field of iSolutions, and using ePrints technology, we have now created a repository which makes selected LANGSNAP data available to researchers worldwide. Research grant success for Julia Hüttner

Congratulations to Julia Hüttner who has been successful in obtaining funding for her project “Fallstudien zur Implementierung von CLIL in den Regelunterricht an HTLs” (Case studies on the implementation of CLIL in mainstream education at colleges of technology) which will run for the next 12 months. Julia is co-investigator on the project, which is led by Professor Ute Smit (University of Vienna) and which has been granted €19,457 by the Austrian Ministry of Education and Women. Diamond Jubilee Project update

Diamond Jubilee project Prof Anna Mauranen, Vice Rector of the University of Helsinki, spent the week of 16th February in Modern Languages, working with Jenny Jenkins on the Diamond Jubilee project. Building on their October meetings, they finalised the details of their project, ‘Linguistic diversity on the international campus’, planning in detail the data collection methods and the analytical frameworks to be applied to each type of dataset. Meaning in Language Learning Network news

The AHRC-funded Meaning in Language Learning network (http://millnetwork.org) led by Professor Roumyana Slabakova (Director of CLLEAR) and Dr. Heather Marsden (York) held its first network event on Saturday, 24 of January, 2015. The aim of the network is to create opportunities for language teachers, language learning researchers, and language education policy makers to meet and exchange ideas around the theme of Meaning in the language-learning context. ESRC network grant success

Laura Domínguez and Roumyana Slabakova have been successful in securing an ESRC network grant (£30,000) as part of an international network of researchers led by Monika Schmid (Essex). This will fund a series of seminars on the topic of First Language Attrition – the process by which the first language of a speaker who uses another language predominantly (e.g. migrants) becomes compromised and shows signs of cross-linguistic interference. AHRC Network grant success

Professor Roumyana Slabakova has secured funding of £42,800 from the AHRC for the Meaning in Language Learning Network, in collaboration with Dr. Heather Marsden (York). The network will create a new forum for dialogue among language learning experts and stakeholders. It includes 18 participants in the UK and 4 international members from Europe and the US. The programme includes 3 workshops, focus groups, a conference colloquium, and outreach activities. Continue reading →

New project on Internationalisation of Higher Education

Dr Julia Hüttner will participate in a three year project (2014-2016) called “Internationalization of Higher Education in bilingual degrees: Analysis of the linguistic, cultural and academic challenges”. The project is led by Prof. Emma Dafouz of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) to 20,000 €. Continue reading →
