Musical Mondays

Composition PhD partnering

During the summer of 2015 I was working on a piece called Construction in Metal, for electric guitar and Guitar Hero Xbox controller, that was due to be performed in November of that year. Ekanayaka Visit

On Monday 18th April, Dr Tanya Ekanayaka, a classical pianist and composer from Sri Lanka signed to Naxos records gave a recital in Turner Sims concert hall and led a workshop with Southampton University Music Department students on the topics of piano performance, composition and improvisation. Saxophone Masterclass

America saxophonist, Professor Jonathan Helton (pictured far right) visited Southampton on February 23. It was a fantastic morning full of saxophone talk and playing. Finalists Wayne Hau, Emily Cox and Laurence Astill and second-year student Hannah Brierley all performed for the masterclass. Perfect Pianists

Artur Rubinstein playing Chopin’s ‘Heroic’  Polonaise no. 6 On Friday March 4th at 8pm on BBC 4, Professor David Owen Norris presents Perfect Pianists,  a compilation of archive film of great pianists, including Benno Moiseiwitsch, Myra Hess, Artur Rubinstein, Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia – David filmed the links at the Cobbe Collection at Hatchlands, so you’ll hear him as well, playing Chopin on Chopin’s own Pleyel. Southampton’s Classical Sax Teacher Dr Angela Space Reveals Saxophone Scale-Off Results

Second-year music student Hannah Brierley won the 2016 Southampton Saxophone Scale-Off. Cool under the pressure of the Dr. Beat (operated by first-year Ewan Atkinson) and confident of her turn-arounds, she managed to best the finalists including last year’s victor, Wayne Hau, who came in second.
