Christopher Fuller
I completed an undergraduate degree in History at Cardiff University in 2000, having specialised in Medieval History, in particular the history of the Crusades and politics in the Holy Land. It is here that I developed an interest in interdisciplinary study, having also minored in Politics.
I then completed a PGCE in History and taught A-level Modern and Ancient History, as well as A-level Politics until 2007, when I then took up a post working in schools liaison at the University of Southampton. During this time, I undertook a History MRes part-time, for which the dissertation was titled 'Winning the War of Ideas: The Influence of Think Tanks on the National Security Strategies of Clinton, G.W. Bush and Obama Administrations.' Having gained a distinction in this, I moved on to a part-time PhD, which is partly funded by the University.
My PhD explores the evolution of American counterterrorism policy from the 1980s to present day, with a particular focus upon the role of the CIA and the use of unmanned vehicles. I also teach a first year undergraduate module titled 'Terrorists, Tyrants and Technology: America's War on Terror', and have supervised a number of dissertations on topics related to terrorism.
In addition to this, I created and run the University's Learn with US programme (www.learnwithus.southampton.ac.uk). This programme is focused upon supporting students in making the transition between further education and higher education, and utilises a range of workshops, taster lectures and seminars to help prepare students. It also aims to help students undertaking the Extended Project Qualification enhance their research skills in preparation for University.
