T2: Reflective Summary: “Online Identity & Privacy”

There are many ways in which people come across to others online; publish themselves to the world via photos, comments, posts and other social media. Likewise, there are many ways in which others try to protect themselves online. I realised a very important thing when reading Jens’s blog about the choice we make when publishing information online.

Although I understand that one shouldn’t overanalyze all the choices we make, Jens made me realise how we come across at times online where no one is actually able to see us in person. I understand that feelings and emotions are conveys through the texts that we input and the way it can be perceived by those who around you is always both negative and positive.

Jack’s respond made me think about factors that affect our online activities in depth and I shared the following video I saw recently with him. It shows how in 2040, every potential president is already unelectable due to Facebook – any activity the candidates had done that can be used against them by following their Facebook interaction in the past and affecting thier campaign.

In the end, what really matters is that being able to know how to behave behind the screen. Monitor our own activities and knowing whatever is being said and done is with a positive intention. Likewise, in terms of giving access to data about ourselves to the World Wide Web, we should all be more in control of the information we want to share and not let what others know about you, control you.
