Blackboard Analytics – October 2013

Google Analytics and University of Southampton Blackboard service

Google Analytics (GA) is turned on within a number of MLE sites including Blackboard and Panopto. In the interest of openness we will share a number of pieces of analytical data with the community. Note that some data is from a smaller sample size and may not reflect 100% of users.

Panopto login loop

We’re recently had a few calls regarding students and staff not having permission to see videos that are listed within the ‘Recorded Lectures’ tab on Blackboard. Often this is a cookies issue.

Firstly you should check to see if it is a cookies issue you are seeing.

Open the page http://coursecast.soton.ac.uk/Panopto/Pages/Sessions/List.aspx

Click on Sign In in the top right corner

panoptologin

Ensure that the menu that appears is set to “Sign in using Blackboard” and press Sign in

Log into Blackboard with your standard University username and password (note, if you are already logged into Blackboard you will not be asked for your username and password again)

You will then be redirected back to the website you were previously viewing.

If the top right corner still says Sign In then you have a cookies problem and should continue following the instructions below. If you can see your name then you are correctly logged in and the issue is that you do not have permission to view the video in question. Ask your tutor if you should have permission to see the video or contact ServiceLine.

Fixing the problem

To fix the problem you will need to clear the cookies on your browser.

If you are using Internet Explorer

  1. Click on Safety > Delete Browsing History and ensure that cookies is ticked
  2. Press Delete.
  3. Close Internet Explorer and re-open it.
  4. Attempt to log in to the video again

More information: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/internet-explorer/delete-manage-cookies#ie=ie-10

If you are using Chrome

  1. Click on the menu > Tools > Clear Browsing Data
  2. Tick Delete Cookies and other site plug-in data
  3. Click on Clear browsing data
  4. Close Chrome and re-open it
  5. Attempt to log into the video again

More information: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95582?hl=en

If you are using Firefox

  1. Click on the Firefox menu > (the arrow to the right of) History > Clear Recent History
  2. From the drop down choose Time range to clear: Everything
  3. Ensure Cookies is ticked
  4. Click on Clear now
  5. Close Firefox and re-open it
  6. Attempt to log into the video again

More information: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/remove-recent-browsing-search-and-download-history

If you are using Safari

  1. With Safari open click on Safari from the top menu bar (between the Apple logo and the File menu)
  2. Click on Preferences
  3. Choose the Privacy tab
  4. Click on Remove All Website Data
  5. Click on Remove now
  6. Close Safari and re-open it
  7. Attempt to log into the video again

The following screenshot shows the the amount and differences in operating systems (OS). There are currently 26,674 active users for the app, 20,830 of them use an Apple device to access the app.
