Topic 2: Reflection on Online Identities

After reading and reviewing other people’s blog posts, it’s clear that what constitutes a separate ‘online identity’ has a subtly different meaning for different people; some took this to mean that if their Facebook and LinkedIn ‘persona’ were different then they had multiple identities. I’d taken a different tack, assuming that an identity was only ‘separate’ when it was fragmented and disconnected (which really can only happen by design). Continue reading →

Topic 2: Reflection

This week’s discussion on the pros and cons of multiple online identities has been extensive and varied. I found the most interesting blogs were those that questioned the future of online identities; the role of technology and those that discussed the stigma attached to multiple identities. The first thing that I noticed after reading the blogs and the attached comments is how much this topic is influenced by personal opinion. Continue reading →

Before engaging with this topic, I was aware that any personal information I supplied on the Web could be stored and collected. However, I never really considered the aftermath of this – the creation of an online identity. Having had little experience with multiple online identities and ‘false’ identities, researching the advantages and disadvantages of such was particularly insightful – it highlighted issues regarding privacy, trust and integrity. This week, looking into the pros and cons of online identity has certainly kickstarted my journey of beginning to think more deeply about how I should consider my actions on the web as an intrinsic part of life but also that if I am to use it, I must also respect the fact that the web has its own dangers and pitfalls that we are not often taught about. Before proceeding onto my research of online identities and privacy, I wasn’t sure of what the actual pros and cons were. The only thing I could think of were childish scandals of fake Facebook profiles which were the hot topic during secondary school. As I mentioned in my ‘Seeing Double’ blog post, the concept surrounding multiple online identities is not overly complex, however the discourse in the comment sections on both here and my peers’ blogs have led me to think outside of my initial opinion-shaped box.
