Topic 2: A reflective summary on polycephaly Identities …

The argument for and against having more than one online identity is more or less down to a matter of choice. As Alice Water said, “The decisions you make are a choice of values that reflect your life in every way” [1]- This also implies with the decision of having more than one online identity. Some argue it does matter while others objects. But is there a perfect right answer?

From some of my readings, research and findings, I came across Tamara’s blog [2] and I have indeed learned subsequently since reading and commenting on her work. She gave an example that is quite obvious but not thought by everyone as she wrote “If a shop assistant remembers me, and recommends something that I might be interested in, then I’d regard this as good customer service. But when a computer does the same, people argue that it’s an invasion of their privacy.” Hence I replied by raising issues like hacking, governmental surveillance, etc., which perhaps encourages people to have more than one online identity just to be on the safe side. Things even got more interesting when I came across Sarah’s blog [3] as it enlightened me on how the concept of digital visitors and residents might influence a person’s choice of having more than one online identity. However it raised a little question, as perhaps that is not always the case.

Overall, this topic has been of great interest as everyone had different views and understanding of it which consequently led to a better grasp of the topic. Personally I only have one identity online and do intend to just have one because like I have always emphasised… it is always down to a matter of choice (as seen on the poll attached to my blog).
