Explaining the concept of digital āvisitorsā and āresidentsā drawing upon personal online experiences to date in support of the points made.
As we all know since Tim Berners-Lee established the concept of the world-wide-web in 1989, a vast majority of homes and workplaces have had a drastic increase on getting connected connected to the Internet. As more and more people interact with the web in various of ways it continuous to grow quiet dramatically, a more enhanced tools are being created for people around the globe in order for them to interact with and make life easier for them, an example of this can be Japanese robots which could be sent under water to fixed oil pipes leaking, this might not be possible for humans because of water pressure.
When I was around 5-6, even in economically development countries, not many people had access to the intranet, as the hardware devices were expensive and getting connect wasnāt easy as nowadays for example you would use dial- up connection to get connected and the connection had limitations in terms on timings which was annoying for most people. However, nowadays Internet is brought in almost every home in many developed countries around the globe and especially in the UK there is Wifi everywhere such as restaurants, coffee shops and even some buses. We never realise that the amount of time that our society spends online has grown radically. Individuals are using several of devices, such as smart phones, tablet laptops etc. which are mostly connected to the intranet either via a network provider or free Wifi.
Every individual having access to the Internet may be classified due how much they uses it and what they use the Internet for.
Digital visitor are individuals that uses the Internet on a need basis to search for focused interests and certain errands they have set to do. Visitors see the web as a series of a pool of information in an organised matter, as they just go online and do what they are intended to and log off without leaving any traces behind (white, 2008).
Digital resident are users who are living out a portion or percentage of their life online, they see the web as a series of spaces and places where other people are, they might be going online to express their opinion and work thorough elements on their identity on their persona online as we can imagine social media is where a lot of it takes place for example: writing blogs about a specific task or writing comments on someoneās tweets, which would be more visible and once they log off they liable to leave some sort of trace (white, 2008).
As I watched Mr David Whiteās video (September, 2013) based on digital mapping I realised that I am more of a digital resident, as my interaction on the web includes me having accounts and using social networking such Google docs, Twitter, Skype and Facebook quiet often. As I use them to communicate with friends, make comments on certain aspects that favours me and I also use them to catch up with certain communities I am member with.
