Launch of Census 2022: Transforming Small Area Socio-Economic Indicators through ‘Big Data’

Posted on 7th June, 2013

One of only 20 to be funded under the ESRC’s new ‘Transformative Social Science‘ programme, this project will explore the feasibility of estimating small area (neighbourhood) census-like statistics from transactional ‘big data’ including large scale fine grained temporal energy monitoring data held by the Faculty. It will involve extensive collaboration with data owners/providers, Census researchers in the Department of Geography and the Office for National Statistics’ Beyond 2011 Census Futures team.

Besides the direct research funding the project also brings with it a £50k grant of additional ESRC funds to be used to foster future transformative and interdisciplinary research in the social sciences.
