As part of the annual Sustainability Action Awards, we’re inviting entries to the first Sustainability Action Photographer of the Year 2016 competition. All of the University’s students and staff are invited to enter the competition, submitting your images on the theme of ‘My Global Goals’.
The theme: My Global Goals
2015 was a landmark year for sustainable development, with 193 governments agreeing to 17 Global Goals to address the major social and environmental challenges facing the world in the 21st Century. The goals include no poverty by 2030, ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere, and achieving sustainable management of natural resources by 2030.
Through the competition, you can tell us through photography what the Global Goals mean to you as an individual. How are you taking action on climate change? What does reducing inequality look like for you? How do encourage peace and justice?
Entering the competition is simple
The application process is quick and easy. Simply submit your photograph(s) and a form (download it from here) to Julia Kendal by email by the deadline of Monday 29 February.
Students and staff can also apply for a Sustainability Action Award to recognise your work or volunteering that is helping to change the world for the better.
Take action on the goals now
Here are a few simple steps you can take to do your bit to support the Global Goals and help change the world for the better:
- Climate action: Switch off your office equipment at the end of each day, and try to avoid single user car journeys to and from work.
- Gender equality: join the International Women’s Week celebrations.
- No poverty: volunteer with SCRATCH, a local charity working to address food, fuel and furniture poverty. Read more about how the University is supporting SCRATCH.
- Quality education: take part in the UK’s first international student sustainability research symposium.
- Responsible consumption and production: check out the Live My City Map – your guide to the best local shops, cafes and sights that meet our sustainability credentials.
- Partnerships for the goals: partnership at uni: get involved in the student-staff partnership initiatives taking place at Southampton.
