Whatever your interests, there are numerous ways you can study sustainability whilst at Southampton:
- Sustainability-related degree programmes, including Environmental Sciences, Geography, Social Sciences, Politics and International Relations…
- Take our new sustainability minor, alongside your main degree.
- Join a university-wide sustainability module: to broaden your horizons, you can take one of our sustainability-related modules, joining a class of students from across all disciplines to explore topics such as environmental change, human rights and global health.

Sustainability is about more than the curriculum; it’s about taking action. Each year hundreds of Southampton students lead the way in making the university more sustainable through:
‘Southampton Blackout: a night out with lights out’ – hundreds of students and staff switch off every piece of office equipment left on unnecessarily for the weekend on just one night! This saves the university money, reduces our carbon emissions and shows students and staff the impact of small actions (plus everyone volunteering gets a coveted Blackout hoodie and a share of over 100 Dominoes pizzas!)- ‘Swap Shop’ – twice a year students and staff get rid of their unwanted clothes and find free gems in our clothes swaps. Everyone enjoys new clothes, clears their wardrobe and all leftover items are donated to British Heart Foundation to sell!
- ‘Business Ethics and Environment Students’ – join other students in helping local business become better employers and have a positive impact on the environment and society (great for your CV!)
- ‘Waste Wars’ – be part of an academically recognised event where staff and students work together to survey the universities waste. Along with heightening your awareness of recycling at Southampton, you will also receive a t-shirt, chocolate bar and food voucher – bonus!
- Join one of the many student societies having a positive impact on university and society, such Southampton Hub (connecting students with social action), Enactus (our social enterprise society)… and many more!
This provides only a glimpse of the exciting and unique events you can get involved in at Southampton. No matter what you study or who you are, by being involved in sustainability you can influence positive change towards the future of the University of Southampton.
