Introduction / intermediate / advanced programming challenge in Python (using the raspberry pi)

We are highly rated in teaching computer science to young people and have always been in the top 10 universities for teaching computer science.  Sharing this experience with your students aims to encourage more young people to take STEM subjects by engaging them in fun interactive projects.

We want to give your pupils a taster of have a programming a lesson here at our impressive computer labs. We are able to offer you an introductory, intermediate or advanced level session here at the University of Southampton.

All we ask is that you give us an accurate description of what your students have covered in their lessons. So we can match our visit to the skills level of the students and focus on the most relevant topics.

Computer game design using python (using raspberry pi)

We are able to teach your pupils how to make computer games using pygame which is based on the popular python programming language.

These workshops are extremely popular. We ask that your pupils have had at least 4 weeks taught programming experience before they attend this workshop. Prior knowledge of python is advisable.

We can accommodate and tailor this visit to suit all levels. All we ask is that you give us an accurate description of what your students have covered in their lessons and any previous experience they have had in programming. This will ensure we can match the session to the skills level of the students and focus on the most relevant aspects of game design.

Phone application (App) design * Pilot Classes needed *

We will soon be trialing beginner level phone app design sessions. This new sessions are in response to the massive rise in mobile phone applications and games being released today. If your class would be interested in this then please do get in touch. If these are successful we will design intermediate and advanced sessions, which will provide students with a more detailed understanding of the process and challenges of phone App design.

Robotics day

Do you think your pupils would be interested in learning more or experiencing robotics in action? If so then we would welcome a group of your students to visit the University of Southampton for the day to get involved and take part in a robotics orientated activity to gain immediate hands on experience. Please contact us to find out more about what we can offer if this is of interest to you.

Hack drop-in day

Is there a specific concept or set of theories your students are struggling with? If that is the case then arrange a drop in session with us where one of our world-leading experts can spend a few hours working through these concepts with your students.

All of the visit days can be complimented with one or a few of the extras below, so you can tailor a day to meet the specific needs of your school and students:

  1. Tours of the university:
    1. This would be useful if its your first time at the university. It is useful for them to see the uni’s lecture theatres, gym and library. We also give tours of specific labs. Its to show the university as a community rather than just as a single classroom. We hope that this inspires your pupils.

    1. We are able to have a session with someone from our UCAS team to give you the best advice possible on how to get to the university of your choice.
    2. Session on careers: This is a useful session for pupils. We give a session on careers in electronics and computer science. We tell you where our students are working, our links with industry and what is available in the job market.
    3. Meet our students: This is the chance to meet some real students to ask about university life, whats it like to study at uni and life at Southampton.
    4. Meet our Rhino: We have a rhino that we would love you to meet. Its an electronic rhino with a brain. We would love to show you.
    5. Visit a research lab – nano lab, gait lab or research lab  We have specialist research labs that we are opening up for you visit as part of your day.
