Launching Soon – New Music Night for Southampton City

playlist-logo-blueStarting this autumn, Soton students can get involved in a great new music night for the City of Southampton called PLAYLIST. Curated by five professional musicians, including several staff members from the Music Department, PLAYLIST will feature high quality music in amazing and unusual spaces. The idea is that the programmes at PLAYLIST feature live music that we really want to hear!

The launch night is on 11 October at the wonderful 13th Century gatehouse, God’s House Tower, in central Southampton. It will feature one of Europe’s leading lute players (and Head of Early Music at the University), Elizabeth Kenny. She will be performing new and old music and is, frankly, brilliant and not to be missed. Also on the bill are the fantastic alternative folk trio Tenderlore and the fabulous cellist Nicola Heinrich.

The second event will take place on 29th November in the intimate setting of the Butcher’s Hook Alehouse in Bitterne Park. In February 2016 the headline act, harpist Olivia Jageurs, promised composers she would video record any notated music they had composed and post it online by 5pm the next day. The only caveat was that it could only be 15 seconds long – and so 15-second harp was born! Fastforward and by the end of 2016 she will have recorded more than 250 of these miniature works. Olivia’s solo set will feature many of these new compositions, which she will perform live for the first time at PLAYLIST. Also on the bill are the gypsy swing trio The Manusa Project, and clarinettist Alison Hughes.

Tickets for these events are now available @ soplaylist.eventbrite.co.uk Tickets are cheaper if ordered in advance and there are reduced for anyone under 26. Hope to see you there!
