Research process

Before taking part:

Before taking part you will be able to ask me any questions you may have.  Also, you will be asked to complete a short consent form to consent to taking part in the research and to state that you agree to carefully looking after a head-camera that you will use as part of your participation in the research and return it to me (or if you work with salmon, a named colleague of yours).

During the research:

You would start by recording your interactions with salmon using a head-camera. If you work with salmon you would record yourself at work, if you eat salmon you would record yourself whilst cooking and eating salmon and if you live or go on holiday near a Marine Harvest salmon farm you would record your perspective of the salmon farm, for example, whilst driving or fishing near by.  When filming, please try to forget the camera is there and try to do what you would do if the camera was not there.  I will arrange with you a convenient time for you to do your filming, and if you work with salmon, a convenient time for your employer.

Please make a note of the name and contact details of anyone you are with whilst you are filming so that I can ask them to sign a consent form if they appear on the video.

For instructions on how to use the head-camera please click on Camera instructions.  As soon as you have done the filming, please check the camera has recorded and if you are unhappy with the footage, feel free to delete it and film again.

After the filming, either me, or if you work with salmon, a colleague, will collect the camera from you, check the camera has recorded OK, and then I will arrange a time to chat to you online about your video and your opinions on salmon.  If anyone else appears in your video, I will ask you for their contact details so I can email them a consent form and ask them if I can interview them also.

The interview will take place online, I will email you questions and you can reply with your answers.  Some of the questions will be about specific clips from your video and I will email these clips to you so you can watch them.  You can either do the interview over approximately one hour, or we can email each other sporadically whenever is convenient for you and the interview can take place over a number of days.

If you work with salmon, at the end of the interview I will ask you if you are happy for the clips from your video footage to be made publically available if voices and faces are anonymised and potentially, some sections are deleted, I will ask your employer and the other organisations in the supply chain for their consent also.  If you, your employer or other organisations in the supply chain prefer not to give consent to make the video publicly available that is absolutely fine and your involvement in the research will still be highly valuable.

After the research:

After the interview, please visit these webpages again to find links to other participants’ videos and in the future, to read reports on the outcomes of the research.
