Project overview

This PhD research project aims to develop an understanding of the success of higher welfare salmon and is mainly funded by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) with additional funding from Sainsbury’s. Freedom Food, Marine Harvest and CEFAS (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) are also project partners.  The research focuses on the Sainsbury’s/Marine Harvest/Freedom Food farmed salmon supply chain in particular due to the support these organisations have offered.  It is being conducted by me, Julia Walker, alongside my supervisor, Dr Emma Roe.

Please click on Get involved or email me using julia.walker@soton.ac.uk to find out how you can take part – if you work with salmon for Marine Harvest Scotland, Freedom Food, Youngs or Sainsbury’s in the Sainsbury’s salmon supply chain, or if you eat salmon from Sainsbury’s sometimes (farmed or wild, certified by Freedom Food or not) then I want to hear from you.

This is an opportunity for you to express your opinions about the UK fish industry and to learn more about the farmed salmon supply chain and fish welfare.  Your involvement will also be of great value to me, in supporting my work towards completing this PhD – thank you in advance.
