Ready for next semester, we are looking to recruit a team of undergraduates and postgraduates to join us in the day-to-day running of the ECS Systems Support service.
As a member of our crew you will be paid at full demonstrator rates and gain prestigious and valuable experience working for the School.
We are looking to build a team of around 12 people, each of whom will be offered either one or two two-hour slots per week (depending on timetabling). During your shift, you will have your own desk in the Helpdesk office and take part in our front line support activities.
We are keen to recruit people who have very good interpersonal skills. A calm, friendly manner and the ability to work well under pressure are vital. A high level of technical skill is not required, however – we will provide the technical expertise.
Essentials:
- You will need to be a member of the School of Electronics and Computer Science throughout your time in the post; withdrawing from your course may also rescind your eligibility for the role.
- The University’s minimum standards of proficiency in the English language are outlined on their main site, but applicants subject to ESOL requirements should note that we expect an IELTS score of 7.0 or higher (or equivalent) for this post, as you will need to express technical concepts in English with little or no preparation time.
- As part of the recruitment process, we may contact your tutor or supervisor to ensure you are able to handle the additional workload. If you are struggling to keep up with your studies, we recommend you think very carefully before applying.
We are keen to see a variety of expertise within the team, and so if you have any of the following special skills, you may also find them to be an advantage (although they’re not required):
- Proficiency in any of the following languages: Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, Polish, Hindi, Urdu. Exceptional English also advantageous.
- Experience with the CAD software used as part of electronics courses within the School
- Knowledge of Microsoft’s .NET languages, especially C# and ASP.NET
- Experience with Matlab and associated toolboxes
To apply, simply send in a copy of your CV, along with no more than 150 words describing why you are interested in the job. E-mail your application to the usual helpdesk address, making sure to include the words HELPDESK JOB in the subject line.
