Policies have been put in place at a departmental level to encourage the adoption of sustainable practice. These include:
- Timers on glassware drying ovens. These prevent the ovens from running un-necessarily all the time, cutting energy costs.
- Using Quartzy Inventory systems. This is an electronic database of chemicals stocked by groups in the department. If in need of a chemical, we can request to see what other groups have available. By sharing chemicals in this way, it prevents ordering chemicals un-necessarily, saving on transport costs and preventing waste of chemicals if only a small amount is needed.
