Building 45 Laboratories
The following laboratories in Building 45 are used by researchers in the Rehabilitation for Health Technologies Research Group to study musculoskeletal, neurological and respiratory conditions:

Biomechanics lab – movement – 3D motion analysis (Vicon), EMG, force plate, ultrasound imaging

Lab 1 – Upper limb rehabilitation robots, iterative learning control.

Lab 2 – Clinical type room for use with mobile equipment, e.g. ultrasound imaging, EMG, mechanical properties of muscle/tendon

Lab 3 – Clinical type room for use with mobile equipment e.g. iterative learning control, wrist rig.

Human Performance Lab – Joint torque measurement, research activities that involve large space for movement. Currently shared with Moving and Handling teaching activity.

Details for accessing labs in Building 45:
Laboratory Manager: Martin Warner
Experimental Officer: Simon Brown

All research laboratory booking requests are to be sent to the Experimental Officer, Simon Brown (or Martin Warner in his absence). Bookings must be directed to one of two e-mail addresses; res45lab@soton.ac.uk for the research labs on the ground floor, or bio45lab@soton.ac.uk for the Biomechanics lab on the third floor. Laboratory timetables can be viewed electronically via the Research Laboratories blackboard page. Staff and postgraduate students who use Microsoft Outlook can view the laboratories’ calendar by searching for the shared calendars ‘res45lab’ (for the ground floor research labs) or ‘bio45lab’ (for the Biomechanics lab). These details can be found on the Faculty of Health Sciences’ intranet site.

Southampton General Hospital Laboratories:

Gait/Movement laboratory
Level E, Centre Block CE107- this lab is equipped with Codamotion 3D motion capture system with a single Kistler Force plate. In addition a synapsys eye movement detection system provides 2D eye measurements.

Details for accessing Gait Lab
Use of these laboratory resources must be discussed with the Senior Experimental Officer Malcolm Burnett prior to booking. Requests to book the gait laboratory should be sent to REHAB@soton.ac.uk. Staff and postgraduate students who use Microsoft Outlook can view the laboratories’ calendar by searching for the shared calendars ‘REHAB’. This can be used to check availability and can be used to request bookings by sending an ‘invite’ to an appointment. These details can be found on the Faculty of Health Sciences’ intranet site.

Level A Laboratories
AA79 Testing Lab and AA80 Technical Lab – used to assess the performance of support surfaces (cushions and mattresses) and devices (catheters, prophylactic dressings, barrier products etc.) using a range of physical sensors and biosensors and physical measurements.

AA81 Biological Lab – used to analyse biochemical concentrations and to conduct cell-based experiments.

We also have an Environmental Controlled Facility in the Welcome Trust CRC

Details for accessing Level A Laboratories
Access is restricted to nominated researchers with key card access.
The research undertaken in these laboratories is generally under the academic supervision of Dr David Voegeli, Dr Bashir Lwaleed, Dr Peter Worsley, Prof Mandy Fader and Prof Daniel Bader.
