Culture

The city is home to the longest surviving stretch of medieval walls in England,as well as a number of museums such as Tudor House Museum, Southampton Maritime Museum, God’s House Tower, the Medieval Merchant’s House and Solent Sky. The SeaCity Museum museum is located in the west wing of the civic centre, formerly occupied by Hampshire Constabulary and the Magistrates’ Court, and focuses on Southampton’s trading history and on the RMS Titanic. The museum received half a million pounds from the National Lottery in addition to interest from numerous private investors and is budgeted at ÂŁ28 million.

The annual Southampton Boat Show is held in September each year, with over 600 exhibitors present. It runs for just over a week at Mayflower Park on the city’s waterfront, where it has been held since 1968.The Boat Show itself is the climax of Sea City, which runs from April to September each year to celebrate Southampton’s links with the sea.

Apart from these, there are lots of theatres such as the Mayflower Theatre (formerly known as the Gaumont) and the Nuffield Theatre based at the University of Southampton’s Highfield campus, innovative art galleries such as Southampton City Art Gallery and Millais Gallery.

City Attractions

Southampton is rapidly becoming the South’s top leisure and cultural destination – no wonder, since there is so much to see and do.

Eating and Drinking

Whether you fancy a quiet drink, coffee break, a lazy lunch with friends or dancing into the small hours, Southampton has the right venue for you. From intimate lounge bars to Leisure World, which houses several restaurants and bars, a 13-screen cinema and two nightclubs, there’s something to suit every taste. West Quay hosts many favourite restaurants and eateries and Ocean Village pairs popular restaurants with stunning views over the marina. Historic Oxford Street is home to Southampton’s finest restaurants, but wherever you are in the city you’ll be spoiled for choice. A wide variety of cuisines from across the globe is represented, with every budget catered for. There are also numerous cafes and restaurants just fifteen minutes from campus in the Portswood area, which are always popular with our student community, as well as plenty of pubs and bars.

Shopping

West Quay is one of the UK’s top 10 shopping centres, with over 100 stores including all the high street favourites. There are also three other shopping centres in the city, as well as boutiques, designer stores and an antiques quarter. There are vintage fairs throughout the year and a Christmas market too, so there really is something for everyone.

Music and Festival

Whatever your musical tastes there are great venues in Southampton for live music. The Joiners, for example, was named Britain’s Best Small Venue in 2013 and is known for hosting up-and-coming bands – Coldplay, Oasis and Radiohead all played there before they were famous. There are also other small venues, including the Talking Heads and The Brook. The Guildhall is a multi-purpose venue, which stages concerts for all music tastes, including pop, rock and classical music. Slightly further afield, the Isle of Wight is host to two festivals; Isle of Wight Festival and Bestival, which are both two of the hottest music events of the year. These are easily accessible using the ferry links to and from Southampton.

Sport

The Sports Centre in Southampton includes a dry ski slope, all-weather pitches, cross-country routes and tennis courts. The Quays Eddie Read Swimming and Diving Complex offers a wide range of sporting activities and you can perfect your swing on the city’s municipal golf course. Our coastal location means great watersports including windsurfing, sailing, ocean racing, power boating and dragon boating.  If spectating is your thing, the Rose Bowl is home to the Hampshire Cricket Club, and Southampton Football Club play in the superb St Mary’s Stadium, just outside the city centre. There are also regular bike rides with Sky Ride and the Southampton Parkrun is a free weekly 5km timed run around The Common.
