Faculty of Medicine Mentoring

The aim of The Faculty of Medicine is to provide all research staff with access to a mentor, who will act as an independent source of career advice and support. This is an expansion of the successful postdoctoral mentoring scheme. Training is available for both mentors and mentees.

We currently offer 4 types of mentoring:

  • Long term mentoring – where you have a number of meetings with the same mentor over a period of time. This gives you both the chance to get to know each other, and therefore the mentor can tailor the advice and encouragement given.
  • One stop mentoring – if you have a specific need you can select a mentor with experience in that specialist area to meet with once (or more if you wish!)
  • Mentoring workshops – an informal discussion around a particular topic, e.g. life work balance, with a group of research staff and a few members of staff with experience in the topic area.
  • Peer mentoring groups – a chance to explore a common area of interest with a group of like minded people, for example, giving oral presentations.

University of Southampton Mentoring

This service offers a unique career mentoring programme supported by the EPSRC and developed through a collaboration between the Diversity Office and the Professional Development Unit at the University of Southampton. A pocketbook on mentoring can be accessed through the Management Pocketbook icon on the homepage of the Professional Development Unit.

Through Southampton Mentoring we aim to develop staff across the University by linking them to the support of more experienced colleagues.
