The XML project: digital literacy in Modern Languages

First steps with Xerte

By Kate Borthwick |

The project team have started getting to know Xerte a LOT better in preparation for getting the students involved in using it next semester. We’ve had a play with it and have started preparing a run-through of the task which students will be expected to complete, as part of their Spanish language course.

Our first thoughts are:

  • students will need a great deal of support in using Xerte. They will be assessed on the content of their Xerte learning objects and so we need to make sure that they are supported in being able to achieve the learning outcomes required by the course to the standard they wish to. For this reason, I will create ‘pathways’ through Xerte to enable each student to achieve a simple range of tasks, and will produce step-by-step guides to help in this. We will also have tutorial sessions with all students on other technical aspects of Xerte, so that those who wish to experiment and go further can do so! I will be on standby each week to answer technical and pedagogical questions as they go along!
  • our students will become ‘digital champions’ for Xerte and so we have begun to plan how we cascade project work further within Modern Languages and then beyond into the wider university.

Some technical issues:

  • we had an issue with embedding Youtube videos which was to do with https vs http coding. Watch this space for a solution to this!
