Undergraduate course & year of graduation: BSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare (Hons), 2012 (Guildford)

Research project: Understanding social dynamics and their relevance for breeding success in captive populations

Highlight of the course so far: Practicing using camera traps in the woodlands around Marwell Zoo and in my local area.

Thoughts for the future? I hope that this course will provide me with the knowledge and contacts to become established in the conservation community.

Research project: How large herbivores affect lowland heath invertebrates on Eelmoor Marsh

Highlight of the course so far: Getting settled in at Marwell Wildlife and meeting the conservation team.

Thoughts for the future? Wildlife conservation in the UK.

Undergraduate course and year of graduation: BSc Zoology (Hons) from the University of Nottingham, graduated 2011.

Research project: The effect of predation on Grevy’s Zebra (Equus grevyi)

Highlight of the course so far: As well as the course itself, having the opportunity to be involved in conservation projects at Marwell Zoo, involving species in the animal collection, has been really interesting.

Thoughts for the future? I would like to be involved in conservation projects abroad that engage local people in their efforts.

Undergraduate course & year of graduation: BSc Environmental Science (Hons), 2013 at the University of Southampton

Research project: The reintroduction of Scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah) to Tunisia and the impact on the ecosystem

Highlight of the course so far: Getting to grips with the process behind the big decisions within conservation, such as breeding programmes, reintroductions and research drivers.

Thoughts for the future? I want to develop my research and contribute to the IUCN’s ground-breaking work on the red list of ecosystems.

Undergraduate course & year of graduation: Bsc Biology (Hons) University of Southampton, 2013

Research project: Population demography and movement of African elephants in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya

Highlight of the course so far: I love the practical learning aspect of the course, using the radio tracking equipment in Marwell Wildlife’s woodlands is better than reading about it in a textbook.

Thoughts for the future? I would love to work in the field in Africa, enabling wildlife to coexist with local communities and benefit each other.

Research project: The success of reintroduction projects

Highlight of the course so far: Having lectures by and seminars with active conservation biologists at the top of their field.

Thoughts for the future? I would like to become directly involved with reintroduction projects and contribute to the growing debate surrounding this contentious topic.
