Portus Project tasks

Hi everyone

The picture posted of the site looks already like it will be really exciting.

Out of interest are we all going to be assigned to different fixed positions on the project or if we have a burning desire to get involved in a certain field (for instance I really want to get involved with the photography aspects as well as to try and develop my understanding of how materials discovered are recorded and preserved) will it be okay for us to choose what areas of the project we can work on?

Hi Stephen,

If you look on the module information page there should be a link to the training matrix. This lists everything that you should have a go at during the field season (core skills) and other things that we hope you will have a chance at. Because it is a long list and because some things only involve one or two of you you might only get a day or even only a half dayon them. However, wherever possible we are keen to give you opportunities to develop specific skills. So, if you have a particular interest like photography or RTI then maybe do some background reading first and we can then move you on faster to the more complex tasks. If you are into photography then definitely check out highlight reflectance transformation imaging – there is some good information about this on the cultural heritage imaging website. Just to add to what Graeme said- the level of flexibility depends on a number of things, including in which capacity one partakes in the field school. For Southampton UG students this is a part of their obligatory fieldwork training and there are some skills that we simply have to take you through while there (see the matrix that Graeme mentioned). Same is true for CIP students who will need these skills to successfully pass assessment at the end of the course. Lifelong learners who are not doing it for credits are sometimes there pursuing individual interests, which might in some cases result in slightly different task assignment.
But as Graeme said- we really are keen to give you an opportunity to pursue your interests, as much as logistics of the whole operation allow it. As I will be coordinating participants’ training do feel free to approach me if there is specific work that you are interested in and I’ll see what can be done.

  That sounds brilliant – thank you to both of you – it sounds like a fantastic opportunity to learn about so many different aspects of archaeological excavation. I will certainly look forward to it.
